Margaret Warner

Chairwoman of the Board 

Margaret Warner was the senior foreign correspondent for The PBS NewsHour. Before joining the NewsHour in 1993, she was a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, The San Diego Union- Tribune, the Concord Monitor, and Newsweek. Margaret is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a trustee of the Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges, and she serves on the President’s Council on International Activities at Yale University. In 2008, she won an Emmy for her coverage of the turmoil in Pakistan and the Edward Weintal Prize for International Reporting from Georgetown University’s Institute for the Study of Diplomacy for her overseas reporting.”

Miina Matsouka

Member of the Board 

Miina Matsuoka has 15 years of experience in Business Operations and Business Development, having served as Business Developer and Vice President of the award winning architectural lighting design company L’Observatoire International. She is also a co-founder of lighting think tank PhoScope, and is currently focused on their solar lighting initiative Light Reach Network. She holds an M.A. in International Public Policy from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a B.A. in Mathematics from New York University

Russell Hanser

Member of the Board 

Russ Hanser is a partner at Wilkinson Barker Knauer, LLP, a law firm focused on telecommunications, technology, and energy matters. He has been at the firm for about 15 years, having previously spent time working at the Federal Communications Commission and other law firms.  He is passionate about the human rights, development, and digital inclusion issues at the heart of Azadi’s mission and performs pro bono legal work on behalf of refugee rights.  Russ is a graduate of Amherst College, Harvard Law School, and Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies.  He lives in Fairfax, Virginia, and has a teenaged daughter.

Maryam Zar

Member of the Board 

Maryam Zar is the founder of Womenfound and the Commissioner, Los Angeles Commission on the Status of Women. Maryam was born in Iran and came to the US in 1979. In 1992 she returned to Iran where she worked as a correspondent at a time when the nation was emerging from war. She was named Editor for an English language newspaper called Iran News. She returned to the States to pursue a law degree and currently chairs the Westside Regional Alliance of Councils. She was the first VP of Communications of USNC UN Women LA, the founding Chair of the Pacific Palisades Task Force on Homelessness and was an elected Delegate for Assembly District 50.

Lauren Bohn

Member of the Board 

Lauren is an independent journalist, editor, and social entrepreneur. Formerly, she was an editorial director at YES! Magazine, The GroundTruth Project’s inaugural Middle East correspondent, editor-at-large, and a columnist for Foreign Policy magazine. She’s the co-founder of Foreign Policy Interrupted, a start-up incubator and fellowship program dedicated to changing the ratio and getting more women miked and bylined. She’s also the co-founder of SchoolCycle, a United Nations Foundation campaign in Malawi and Guatemala to provide bikes for adolescent girls to get to school. She’s a fellow at New America.

Casey Stavropoulos

Member of the Board 

Casey Stavropoulos serves as Director of Social Impact for Mastercard. She focuses on the Center for Inclusive Growth, the philanthropic hub of Mastercard. She has worked at the intersection of policy and communications for the U.S. Justice Department, APCO Worldwide, McKinsey & Co. and the Obama for America campaign. She holds an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University (SAIS) and a B.A. from Loyola University-Chicago. 

Scott Lunt

Member of the Board 

Scott Lunt is an independent filmmaker living in Denver, Colorado focused on creating socially aware documentaries. He has experience working with National Geographic and the World Bank and also helped to teach the first multimedia classes for Azadi in Athens.

Lluís Dalmau

Project Manager

Lluís Dalmau is the current liaison of the regional Government of Catalonia in Silicon Valley. He coordinates economic exchanges across the Atlantic, promotes Catalonia globally and oversees investment projects. He holds an MA in international economics at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies and a BA in journalism at Ramon Llull University.
